GCSE Maths group tuition

A small group, a plan for the year, and someone marking the work every week. Groups are no more than 5 and are arranged by ability. Everything else on this site stays free whether or not you ever book a session.

How students are grouped

By ability, not by exam board or age — until the exams get close.

Placed by the diagnostic

The free trial is a private lesson, arranged at a time that suits you. The short diagnostic in it shows which topics are actually missing, and that is what decides the group — rather than a predicted grade or a school set.

Foundation and Higher kept apart

The two tiers are never mixed. Roughly half the Higher content does not appear on a Foundation paper at all, so mixing them wastes somebody's time in every session.

Board does not matter, most of the year

AQA, Edexcel and OCR assess the same subject content, so the teaching is the same whichever your child sits.

The exam technique block

In the final month or so before the exams, groups are rearranged by board. Same content, but the boards ask about it differently, and practising your own paper's style is worth real marks.

What a place includes

The weekly lesson is the smallest part of it. Most of the work happens between lessons.

A free trial lesson, with a diagnostic

One to one, at a time that suits you, with no other students in it. Your child sits a short diagnostic that finds the specific gaps rather than giving a grade, and it is what decides which group they join.

A term plan mapped to their target grade

Written after the diagnostic, so you can see which topics are being covered when, and how that builds towards the grade your child is aiming for.

A small group of similar ability

No more than 5 students, and never fewer than 3. Everyone in the room is working at a similar level on the same tier, so nobody is lost and nobody is bored.

Homework, marked with written feedback

Not a tick and a score. Written comments on where the method went wrong and what to do differently next time.

A progress report every half term

In writing, to you. What has improved, what is still costing marks, and what we are doing about it next.

A mock exam review

The mock is worked through properly rather than handed back with a number on it, so your child can see where the marks actually went.

An exam technique block before the papers

In the final month or so before the exams, students are regrouped by board — AQA, Edexcel and OCR — to practise the way their own papers ask questions.

Everything on the free site, always

Video lessons, notes and question banks across 11+, GCSE and A Level. Free to everyone, students or not.

If it is not right, you get your money back

If you are not happy in the first month, I will refund that month in full.

What I will not do is promise a grade. Nobody can honestly do that. What you get is a clear plan to reach your child's target grade, and an honest report every half term on how close it is.

Trust and safeguarding

  • Enhanced DBS checked. Certificate available on request.
  • A parent or guardian books the place, and confirms consent before a first session. All contact goes through you.
  • Sessions are online, so it does not matter where in the country you are. All you need is a laptop or tablet with a camera, and somewhere quiet to work.
  • All contact goes through parents. Students are never messaged privately.
  • If a group chat is used, the parent is in it.
  • The free trial is one to one. You are welcome to sit in on it, and I would encourage it. After that, all lessons are group lessons.
  • You are welcome to sit in on any lesson, at any time, unannounced.
  • Lessons are taught by me personally, not passed to another tutor.

Questions parents ask

What happens in the free trial?

It is a private lesson, one to one, with no other students in it, arranged at a time that suits you. Your child works through a short diagnostic with me, which shows which topics are actually missing rather than what a predicted grade says. That is what places them in the right group. You get my honest read afterwards, including if I think a group is the wrong fit. Nothing is paid until a group and a time are confirmed.

My child is doing 11+ or A Level. Can you teach them?

Not at the moment. Group sessions are GCSE maths only, so that every student in a group is working towards the same papers. All the free video lessons, notes and question banks for 11+ and A Level stay open to everyone, and you are welcome to join the waiting list — it is how I decide which group to open next.

How are the groups arranged?

By ability, not by exam board or age. The diagnostic in the free trial places each student, and Foundation and Higher are never mixed, because roughly half of the Higher content does not appear on a Foundation paper at all. What matters is that everyone in the room is working at a similar level.

Does it matter which exam board my child is on?

Not for most of the year. AQA, Edexcel and OCR assess the same Department for Education subject content, so the teaching is the same whichever your child sits. It starts to matter in the final month or so before the exams, which is why groups are rearranged by board for the exam technique block — same content, but the boards ask about it differently, and that familiarity is worth real marks on the day.

When do the groups run?

The launch groups are Monday 6:30pm–7:30pm, Wednesday 6:30pm–7:30pm and Friday 5pm–6pm. Each lesson is 1 hour.

How does payment work?

Founding member price: £35 a lesson, held for the first year. You can pay monthly — four lessons in a typical month, £140. Payment is charged at the start of the month by bank transfer. There is no registration fee, no materials fee and no minimum term.

What if my child misses a lesson?

If it is illness or an emergency, that lesson is refunded in full, or carried over and taken off the following month — whichever you prefer. Just let me know. For any other reason the lesson is still charged, because the place in the group is held for your child either way. In every case you get the worksheet, the notes and the marked answers for that week, so they can catch up before the next lesson.

Is this online or in person?

Online, always. Your child joins from home on a laptop or tablet with a camera, and needs somewhere quiet to work. It means you are not limited to tutors within driving distance, there is no travel time either way, and a session is never lost to traffic or illness on my end.

What does my child need to join?

A laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone, a reliable connection, and paper and a pen — working on paper matters, because that is what they do in the exam. I send the joining link before each session. Nothing to install and no account to create.

Do you contact my child directly?

No. All communication goes through you. If a group chat is set up, you are in it. Students are never messaged privately.
